There are a number of options for those wanting to stay at Trewern on a self catering basis. If it’s available you could hire the whole main house, stay in our lodge and/or pod, or camp in the grounds in our yurts, tents or campervans/caravans. The centre is in a great spot for those wanting to explore the Black Mountains and Wye Valley by highways and byways or on the water, with easy access to most of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Elan Valley and other parts of mid Wales as well as the Herefordshire countryside. There are historic buildings and heritage sites, farm parks, food and drink producers, and pony trekking and other activity centres all nearby. It may also be possible to book our instructors for activities or to use our other facilities, contact us for details. As with all bookings at the centre, guests are asked to bring their own pillow cases and bedsheets, as well as quilt covers or sleeping bags.
Main House
The main house at Trewern can accommodate groups of up to 70 in shared bedrooms, with 9 dormitories accommodating up to 10 and 4 staff/family rooms sleeping between 2 and 4 people. It is only available for self catering bookings on a sole occupancy basis (please bear in mind our staff may need access to parts of the building during the working week), which makes it a great option for large family gatherings, weddings and other celebrations.
The kitchen is large enough to cater for a full house (and occasionally more!), with both gas and electric cookers, commercial mixers, warming cupboard, boiler/urn, large capacity sinks and preparation areas. We are well equipped with a range of suitable cooking pots and pans, roasting tins/baking trays of various sizes and plenty of serving trays and dishes. There is also a commercial dishwasher for all the crockery afterwards. When staying at the centre on a self catering basis, clear instructions of how to use the appliances and safety features are given, and space allocated in the fridges/freezers.

Hobbit House/Pod
This beautiful Hobbit Pod oozes charm and is an ideal family glamping pod. If you want a fun log cabin to enhance your family stay this quirky Hobbit Pod is definitely for you.
Inspired by the dwellings made popular in the Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit Pod adds charm and character to your stay. It is fully heated and has electric throughout.
The first area is a family lounge/diner with basic self-catering facilities including kettle, microwave and fridge (outside is a gas BBQ). Off the main room we have 2 bedrooms, one double and one with 2 bunks making the ideal family staycation.
The Pod is accessed with a lockable front door and has a front decked area, with views of Mouse Castle and our beautiful safe Paddock play field just at the door. If booked in advance, we can also offer qualified teacher led outdoor activities.
Camping
Camping at the centre can take two forms, either bring your own tents, or hire our yurts! For tents, there are a number of areas around the centre which are ideal: the fields are largely flat with few stones and fairly well drained, and many offer great views. The centre has a range of outside lighting, which is either time or motion controlled. Use of the outside showers, covered areas and drying room by arrangement.
Yurts
Camping with a fraction of the hassle!
What is a yurt?
Traditionally a yurt is a portable circular dwelling made of a lattice of flexible poles and covered in felt or other fabric. They are a sturdy, reliable type of tent. Yurts have been the primary style of home in Central Asia, particularly Mongolia, for thousands of years.
Our hand crafted Yurts were made from steam bent ash and durable canvas by local craftsman Henry Dowell and installed in 2016 to offer extra capacity for visiting groups. They are now also available on a self catering basis, offering a step up from camping, with a solid floor, electricity, and real beds (please see the note above about bedding). Yurt-users have use of the outside showers and toilets, and there is a covered area for cooking and washing up, plus access to the drying room by arrangement. There is also a barbecue for use by all campers.
At Trewern we have 2 Yurts Ideally situated in their own area, a sheltered location close to showers and toilets. They have an amazing aspect of Mouse Castle with our beautiful safe Paddock play field just at the door.
We have a large family Yurt that sleeps 6 with 2 futons and 2 bunk beds and a small family Yurt that can sleep 4 with 2 futons and 1 bunk bed. Each has an electric supply with over head light and socket, lockable doors and can be booked separately or in conjunction with our other self-catering POD or Lodge.
Activities
If booked in advance, we can also offer qualified teacher led outdoor activities. With Hay on Wye just a mile’s walk to the centre of Town this is the perfect location for a quiet retreat or an Adventure of a Life time!
